Cameroon Public Transport Network

CountryCamroonYear2022Share

The Cameroon Public Transport Network project, particularly focused on the cities of Yaoundé and Douala, is aimed at addressing the significant transportation challenges caused by rapid urbanization. These cities face major issues such as congestion, poor road safety, and outdated public transportation systems, including reliance on informal transport like moto-taxis and shared taxis (Cameroon Tribune) (MoiliseYourCity)

Challenge

  • Urban Sprawl: Both cities are expanding rapidly, increasing the demand for efficient public transport. However, the current infrastructure is insufficient, with congested roads and inadequate pedestrian pathways (Cameroon Tribune)
  • Outdated Public Transport: Most of the public transport vehicles, including taxis and moto-taxis, are outdated and contribute to air pollution and traffic congestion (MoiliseYourCity)

Solution

RHT Africa, in collaboration with Scania, has focused on:

  • Route Optimization: Designing bus routes to reduce congestion and improve coverage in key urban areas.
  • Modernizing the Fleet: Introducing modern buses to replace obsolete transport modes, improving safety, and lowering emissions (MoiliseYourCity) (Business in Cameroon)

Impact

  • Sustainability: The project is designed to reduce both travel time and greenhouse gas emissions by about 10%, compared to a scenario where no action is taken. The expected reduction in traffic time is significant, potentially cutting it by 40% (MoiliseYourCity)
  • Service to Commuters: Thousands of daily commuters in both Yaoundé and Douala are now benefiting from a more reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly public transport system (Cameroon Tribune) (Business in Cameroon)
