Challenge

Kampala, Uganda’s capital, faced severe urban congestion due to an outdated transport system and rapid population growth. This not only resulted in long travel times but also contributed to poor air quality and economic inefficiency.

Solution

RHT Africa, in partnership with the Tondeka Metro Corporation, developed and implemented a comprehensive Bus Mass Transit System (BMTS) for the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area—the project aimed to revolutionize urban mobility by providing affordable, efficient, and sustainable public transport.

Key aspects of the solution included:
  • Route Design: Advanced planning using AI-powered technology (Optibus) to optimize bus routes and reduce travel times across major towns including Entebbe, Wakiso, and (Wikipedia) (Optibus Blog).
  • Technology Integration: Real-time passenger information systems, cashless payment methods, and GPS-based fleet management were implemented to enhance operational efficiency (Sunrise Uganda) (Optibus Blog)
  • Driver Training: Over 1,000 bus drivers and staff were trained to ensure safety and service quality (New Vision)
Impact
  • Deployment of 1,030 Buses: The initial fleet of buses operates across a 25-kilometer radius, connecting key urban centers to Kampala. Future phases are expected to increase the fleet to over 3,000 buses. (Wikipedia) (Optibus Blog)
  • Improved Commuting Experience: The project significantly reduced congestion and travel times, benefiting over 12 million passengers annually. Using cleaner technologies, including electric buses, is expected to improve air quality further. (Optibus Blog) (New Vision)
  • Job Creation: The project generated over 12,000 jobs in bus operations, maintenance, and terminal services. (Optibus Blog)
